Key Largo Reef Snorkel in John Pennekamp

Key Largo Diving Capital of The World, the first island in The Florida Keys and the start of the upper keys is probably, along with Key West, the island with the most attractions.

Key Largo means Long Key o Cayo Largo in Spanish.

The island is the first key in The Florida Keys.

Key Largo is known to have more commercial life than the other Keys being it is so close to the mainland and the longest key in the chain.

Key largo is known for superb diving (world largest artificial reef) and house to John Pennekamp Coral Reef Underwater State Park where you can find the famous Christ of the Abyss underwater statue and dive the mysterious USS Spiegel Grove or you can snorkel beautiful turquoise waters with a variety of marine life that is the envy of most of the Caribbean reefs.

If diving is not your priority, you can take a ride in the African Queen, Kayak the crystal clear waters of Blackwater sound, unwind for a cold beer at the famous Caribbean Club where the movie “Key largo” was filmed and watch the sun go down with the mandatory margarita in hand at Sundowners on the bay.

An excellent spot for sport-fishing with the Florida Bay to the west and the open waters of the Atlantic ocean to the east.

You’ll be sure to find plenty of action to satisfy your appetite for the mighty sailfish if deep sea fishing is your dreamed adventure or the powerful tarpon playing in the back country waters of the Florida Bay.

For beginners charter boats and guides will take you for a once in a lifetime fishing trip.

A variety of Eco-friendly tours are available and the Everglades National Park is just steps away.

Key Largo and the entire Florida Keys are undergoing renovations with luxury resorts and condo hotels but you still can kickback and relax in your RV or tent in Key Largo Campground and John Pennekamp state park for a close encounter with the wildlife, as the legend says, “if you never camped in the keys, you don’t know the real keys”, all campgrounds have tent and full service RV sites.

After a busy day on the water you can enjoy the best and freshest seafood in town. Restaurants, bars and watering holes will keep you entertained until late night hours while you share your big “catch tales” with fellow travelers.
